EXERCISE 1 : The arrival

EXERCISE 1: The arrival

"Application exercise based upon the images associations in a "crossed" page composition, the drawing of the scenery and the objects; the shots, limits and aims, the parallel narration text/image."

"The theme of the arrival talks about YOUR arrival, in the fine art school or in Liege. First work on your first impressions, your first feelings; your apprehension, observation, satisfaction or disappointment. Think about a detail, an object that paid your attention and linked to your arrival. This will be there for all to see."

"This first sequence in one page is a work on the set (scenery?), details and objects with a possible presence of characters (not compulsory). On the panels you’ll place a text -thought or spoken- for a dialogue or a personal thought. There must have a link between the image and the text, and this link can be simple or more subtle."

"Think of the images association, there must have a graphical link among the five panels that can be linked to the same scenery, the same atmosphere, to different sceneries mixing present time and past time (flash-back). An image can be different from the others so as to make an element noticeable (object or character). Start from your past, your daily life."

"The page is composed of five images: four of them have the same shape, and a double one in a rectangular shape.
-This big rectangular panel will contain the main or the whole shot. It will be placed at the beginning, at the middle or at the end of the page.
-The four identical panels will link to the details, objects or characters, with studied limits, shots and aim."

Personal comments

This is a page made for an exercise in my comics course. The objective was expressing our feelings after our arrival in the fine art school or in the city; this is why I haven’t hesitated to annoy you with my depressions!
As for the character I wanted to use my old good Amisay; but here he’s in a realistic world, instead of the crazy colored world he usually lives. This is the reason why the car wears clothes: jacket, jeans, shoes
This page is a photocopy from the original: this is why in the panels 3 and 4, the likes of Amisay are totally black. We can see the character because it’s the reflect of the bookshop’s window we can see: in the original page, the reflects and the characters have been drawn with a pencil, so as to create a hue difference between the pencil-made lines (grey) and the Indian-inked lines (black). In this photocopied version…well all the lines are black !!!
I’m quite satisfied with this page, because I know I can draw a cathedral and a Spawn cover in a stamp-sized square!!! However there’s an enormous presence of white everywhere; and adding some textures there and there would be the welcome!

An explanation for English-speaking people, about the covers on panels 3 and 4:

-“Lanfeust” is the hero of a French sci-fi comic, and as expected, the lines of this comic are very rich and complex, and is totally CGed.
-“Spawn”…well you know him!
-“Le Chat” is a character made with very simple lines and flat colors. Le Chat is now extremely famous and appreciated in France and Belgium thanks to his humoristic play on words, expressions and proverbs.
