De même que l'oeuvre d'Auguste Comte a été plus imaginée que lue, de même l'influence qu'il a pu exercer, ainsi que les idées et les actions qu'il a pu inspirer à ceux qui, à des degrés divers, ont subi son empreinte, ont fait l'objet des spéculations les plus fantaisistes. Le présent recensement se propose donc, non pas de faire oeuvre d'érudition, mais de fournir des matériaux aussi objectifs que possible à tous ceux qui voudraient se faire une opinion sur le positivisme en "jugeant l'arbre à ses fruits".
Aux disciples proprement dits, c'est à dire à ceux qui -- orthodoxes ou hétérodoxes -- ont accepté l'étiquette de positivistes, on a donc joint ici tous ceux qui ont subi, à un moment ou à un autre de leur carrière, une forte influence d'Auguste Comte.
Ce travail, tel qu'il se présente aujourd'hui, est encore très incomplet et comporte certainement beaucoup d'erreurs. Toutes les critiques ou contributions seront donc reçues avec gratitude.
