Villa needed a replay to overcome West Brom in the semi final and faced Manchester United who had denied Birmingham the chance of meeting their fiercest rivals at Wembley, by beating them 2-0. But the match was marked by controversy over the sixth minute injury to United goalkeeper Ray Wood, who broke his jaw in a challenge with McParland and had to go off.
