EQUIPMENT FILES
Pistol Ionut´s Equipment Files for Rommel´s Campaign
Panzer General I is a great game,but....SSI tryied to make the "perfect"
WW2 strategy game, but
we all know that's imposible. The "major" errors of PGI i think are
in the equipment file.The
original equipment file had pretty strange values for some units,
the only reason i can see for this
being that SSI tried to make a more enjoyable game, loosing touch with
real warfare.
Before you try my version, please read these explanations:
- In real war, the pedestrian infantry was
extremely slow compared to any other unit. For example,
the slowest tank could still move with20-25 kmph and the infantry with
maximum 5 kmph,so at lest
4 times slower. To compare with PG data, the infantry moves with 2-3 hexes
and the slowest tanks
with 3-4 hexes.
- In PG appear
the APC's(Armored Personal Carriers) but they are strangely used(as organic
transports). In real war the infantry units witch had APC's used them as
a combat weapon (infantry
support) - they didn't just used them to the front line and then got out
to fight on foot.
- The engeneers
were highly specialized infantry units which wereused mainly for bridging
,destroying
forts, building(repairing) airports, etc. All engeneers units had
organic transports,not just trucks but
even especially designed APC's.
- The towed guns had almost all organic transports (mainly trucks).
- The anti-aircraft and air defense units
were not independed. They were not supposed to fight for
themselfs or chase enemy aircraft, they were assigned to other fighting
units or major objectives
(which were targets for enemy air attacks).
- The aircrafts were almost all better that
the ones in PG. The only way in wich real aircraft were
worst than PG aircraft is the ammo load. For example in PG an aircraft
could engage 5-6,even 10
targets without returning for a rearming, wich is far from reality.A fighter
group,when encountering a
enemy aircraft group would engage until almost out of ammo,so it
usually wouldn't have enough
ammo for another engagement. The bombers dropped all their payload on the
targeted objectives,or
even on the field,if engaged by enemy fighters.
- No aircrafts were so easy to shoot
down. The air war was more balanced , both sides usually had
some aircraft to engage the enemy ,not like PG were the germans cleared
the skies in 5-6 turns.
Also the ground-air attack was only defensive, and not quite so effective(even
a heavy defended
target could not destroy more than 10% of the enemy planes wich engaged
it).
- Forts
were usually pretty easy destroyed by a good infantry unit in PG
,wich was not the case in real
war.Any major fortified position with big caliber guns would take quite
a few attackers with it,so the
forts are,in this equipment file ,more serios targets.
Any comments ,suggestions
would
be appreciated,
installation notes
- You
must copy the file "ionut01.exe" in the root directory for Rommel
Campaign for instance C:\PG\ Rommel where
you got installed Rommel
Campaign with previous Tortoise Page Rommel Campaign Installation
zip
- Run
the file and a new subfolder will be automatically created. For
instance C:\ PG \ ROMMEL\IONUT
-
Here
the important advantage: You CAN SHARE A SINGLE INSTALLATION
of your PG program...for Rommel Campaing and the equipment
modified
Rommel campaign. When you want to launch the Original Gerold´s Rommel
Campaign..just run the PG.bat file :
C:\ PG \ ROMMEL\Rommel.bat
but if you want to play the modified one..then launch the Game from
C:\ PG \ROMMEL\Ionut\ionut01.bat
- If
your System Crash while playing...you will find the original game
files... inside Sub-Folders named "Bak" (if they exist, it doesnt
means that
you have lost anything...in fact they exist in order
to protect you against
game files loses.
