Underneath, McCarthyism, the Cold War, racism and middle-class conformism belied surface appearances. This site will consider the expressions of this contradiction: the early civil rights movement, the experiences of women and men, the Beat generation, Elvis Presley and the birth of Rock 'n' Roll, the McCarthy hearings, early television and its first scandals, among others.
