The history of Catalan Shepherd is so old that it goes back to the time of the Romans, when they conquered the Iberian Peninsula and came accompanied with two dogs used for the defense of quarters, flocks or attack and another, lighter one that was used to confront the cattle and from them came the Catalan Shepherd.

In the Book of Origins Spanish (L.O.E.) written in 1914 the name appears of "Piar" which was similar to what we refer today as Gos D´Atura Catalá. It was in 1923 at the exhibition the International of Barcelona when it appears. "Milan", is the dog that we consider the clear predecessor of the modern Gos D Atura Catalá. It is in 1926 when "Milan" gains the first record of the history of the breed. In June of 1929 the 7th Canine Exhibition of Barcelona is celebrated, in which 7 "Gossos d'Atura" are registered. "Tac" and "Irises" were both exemplary and the first standard was written up, in that same year of 1929. The father of "Tac" was "Milan". The Gos d'Atura Català lived on farms in Catalonia for centuries, driving livestock and warning the household of the approach of strangers. However, during the 1950’s and 1960’s, with the demographic movement of the population from the countryside to towns, many farms closed and the Gos d'Atura saw its numbers dramatically reduced. It wasn't until the beginning of the 1970's that the recovery process began to take place. Adult dogs and puppies were bought from the remaining shepherds who worked with purebred dogs and who followed the bloodlines. The genetic inheritance of these dogs is present in many of the modern pedigrees of this breed. The Gos d'Atura is one of the few breeds that have remained faithful to its origins and are not being bred for physical appearance alone or on personal whims. Because of this true form to function breeding, a dog from the beginning of the 20th Century could be shown at a present day Dog Show and would look the same as those born recently.

Utilization: Sheepdog, guardian and companion dog. The care and driving of the flocks it is what is the true calling of the breed, because it not only does what the shepherd commands, but can, in many cases, make its own decisions about the direction of the flock. They have a natural instinct to the flocks. By their great bravery and worth, they can also be used in guarding and monitoring. By its size, hair coat, intelligence and great loyalty to its owners, can be an excellent companion dog. General aspect and Character Description. A very dignified dog, active and intelligent, with a gallant expression. Hardy and pleasant character, really devoted to whatever is entrusted to him, wary of strangers, which at times makes them seem unsociable. They are very vigilant, very resistant to heat, cold and all weather. They can survive on a small amount of maintenance and support and can work long hours in extreme conditions. Size. Males should measure 47 to 55 cm. Females should measure 45 to 53 cm. Proportions.
