| How I learned to love the Pets |
| by Aaron Milic |
When I was 14, I had already started collecting music on vinyl. I had George Michael's Faith, Rick Astley's Album plus both singles (Never Gonna Give You Up, Together Forever), Peter Schilling's Best Of, and a few Nylons albums. They are a Cdn group that sing a cappella. Had a worldwide hit called Kiss Him Goodbye in '87... anyway. At my cousins house he was playing a mixed tape, a mixed tape of New Order, Depeche Mode and the Pet Shop Boys. Not a bad line up. It was sort of in the background playing quietly, until 'I'm Not Scared' came on. I asked him to turn it up, then asked him to rewind it. Over and over and over. I had finally found a group making my kind of music. He had one Pet Shop Boys album on vinyl, Actually, which he let me borrow. I was disappointed that the song I loved wasn't on his record. I didn't know what the song I loved was called, since my cousin wasn't into making organized labels for his cassettes. However I loved Actually. One More Chance was my favourite along with Rent. I actually didn't like Hit Music or It Couldn't Happen Here. I found it funny that Hit Music finished the A side and It Couldn't started side B. Now I love both tracks. Gathered some cash, and went to buy my first PSB possession, a cassette of Introspective. I immediately stuck the cassette in the car radio. I loved it. My father did too, although more accurately, he loved the music, he still doesn't think much of Neil's voice. Domino Dancing became my new favourite. It destroyed itself in the car's tape deck, had to buy a second one. Even that one got a bit screwed up. Not long after I got the cassettes for Please and Disco. Overall Disco was my favourite tape, from beginning to end. I also found the cassette single for So Hard. I had no idea what it was, but I was happy when I found out that it was an early indication that a new album was due out. I bought my first CD player, a Goldstar, $200. First CD, Pet Shop Boys Please. I wore it out. My parents grew to hate that CD. Funny little tidbit... until I owned Please, and checked out the photos inside, I always though that Chris was the vocalist and Neil was the keyboardist! After that point, I bought all the albums on Cassette and CD and Vinyl. I went PSB crazy and when Behavior came out, I started checking out all kinds of record shops, buying up all kinds of singles and things. The rest is history. I eventually did get into Depeche Mode and New Order, though that didn't happen until between Behaviour and Very. Ok your turn. Bounce |
