« Octobre 1988 (si mes souvenirs sont bons), la façade du HMV d’Oxford Street à Londres est recouverte de raies, une jaune, une verte… avec pour seul mot « Introspective ». Je découvre le nouvel album des Pet Shop Boys et le déclic se fait… etc. etc. » … /… Pour moi le point fort des Pet Shop Boys, c’est leur second degré. Faire croire qu’ils sont constamment sérieux. C’est là que je les préfère. Relisez ma lettre à présent. |

'October 1988 (If my memory serves me), The front of HMV Oxford street is covered in stripes, a yellow one, a green one... with just one word 'Introspective'. I discover the new Pet Shop Boys album and something clicks... etc. etc.' But no, I'm not going to give you the description of my tormented adolescence, where I couldn't find anyone to talk to... nor how after years in blackness, PSB opened a path of Light in my oh so sad life. That would just be a lie. After all, it's me that exists through them, but them that exist through me (or should I say us). Who buys their records? Who goes to their concerts? Who participates in discussions about this or that lyric, remix or album? Artists are like vampires that feed on those that buy their record or go to see their film. Their secret dream is to guide the lives of their fans, so that they can't live without knowing what their idols (or gurus) will say on their next record. PSb want to influence the character, artistic fibre and imagination of those who listen to them. Also they make us believe the opposite. It's subtle, but i haven't fallen into their trap. I don't fantasise about Bruce Weber's photos, nor do I buy into the irony of their 'camp' Hi-NRG side... As to the Crypto-historical Marxist references in their songs, they simply don't interest me. I prefer to believe, in effect I'm sure, that my intellect and my tastes have been shaped by real encounters, by solid reading and by listening to music that is for the most part instrumental (this develops the imagination thousands of times more than when words whisper the answers to your questions!). In addition, what could I have in common with two English multi-millionaires who came from another generation than mine? Homosexuality could throw me people that understand me. That's true, but I've always found that there are as many different types of homosexuals as there are heterosexuals... And I hope that listening to PSB didn't make me gay (I'm joking..) In effect the Pet Shop Boys have had no influence on my life. They are there. They exist. Full stop. If I learned tomorrow that they'd stopped making music, I think that this piece of news would leave me indifferent. The Pet Shop Boys are no more? So what? My life is elsewhere... .../... For me the Pet Shop Boys' strength is their second degree. To make us think that they are constantly serious. It's there that I prefer them. Re-read my letter now. |
