The most recent CD from the Jazz trio Tuna Otenel, Pierre Michelot and Philippe Combelle "Ecume de Vian " ( Froth of Vian ) is now avalaible. Two well-known names, Pierre Michelot on bass and Philippe Combelle on drums, accompany Tuna on piano.
Pierre Michelot is surely one of the living legends of jazz today. He initialy started his career by playing alongside with Rex Stewart and Kenny Clarke. He toured and recorded with such greats as Miles Davis, Lester Young, Bud Powell, Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Max Roach, Johnny Griffin, Hank Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, John Lewis, Django Reinhardt, Clifford Brown, Sydney Bechet, Roy Eldrige, Lee Konitz, Quincy Jones, Yehudi Menuhin. He contribued with Barney Wilen and Miles Davis to the hightly acclaimed soundtrack of Louis Malle's classic film " Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud ". He recorded as a sideman with Dexter Gordon and Herbie Hancock on the Round Midnight soundtrack. Pierre Michelot is a vibrant force in jazz, a bassist who can, tastefully meet the needs of diverse musical concepts. Drummer Philippe Combelle belongs to the most recent generation of a notable French jazz family. Son of the saxophone player and conductor Alix Combelle, Philippe Combelle got a long list of credits, among wich Stephan Grapelli, Sonny Stitt, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie... He is one of the highly demanded drummers in France and in Europe.
"L'Ecume de Vian" contains eleven compositions. Eight are Otenel's originals, and three standards. Otenel's compositions reflect his rather nostalgic, yet powerful melodic side of him. His melodies often seem to underline melancholy with a touch of hope. "Aurore", will make you feel the heat of the sun on your skin, "How could you break my heart", named by Charlie Parker's wife Chan Parker, "Ballad For Pierre", Otenel's tribute to great Pierre Michelot, "Circus", taking Otenel back to his childhood years, "L'Ecume de Vian", inspired by Boris Vian's novel " L'Ecume des jours ", composed 20 years ago on a gloomy Ankara afternoon, Kusadasi, dedicated to the beautiful southern city, Bebop Samba, a cheerful celebration, For Lucky, Otenel's hommage to great Lucky Thompson.
