Here is a list of repositories from where you can download freely
the sources or the binaries of many Unix programs.
The GNU Project has an
official server. Here is explained what are the current projects,
what is the Free Software Foundation's philosophy, where to get the
programs and their documentations.
In France, the Gnu packages can be fetched easily from the IRISA ftp server in
Brittany.
The Sunsite
in the UK stores a huge number of software products. You can
download packages from this ftp repository.
To manage your configurations, you definitely need CVS, the Control Version System.
It is the great Unix version for the i486 family processors and
others. Linux Online is
the central site about this operating system. There is a lot of
documentation about it available on the Net. Here is a selection :

Project proposes an extensive documentation about Linux,
such as books, manual pages, Howto, FAQ etc ...
The Linux Weekly News
keeps you up-to-date, with concise news for all interests in the
Linux World. Slashdot.org
gives news for nerds on the stuff that matters. Fresh meat's got to be checked
every morning.
The site Linux
Links is one the best linux portal on the web.
The Linux Gazette issued
monthly provides a lot of very useful information. Many tricks,
tips, especially for beginners are given.
Where to find the programs ?
The Linux programs can be accessed very easily from these
directories at the LIP6 site.
The Linux world can be explored from the Linux Org in the UK.

gives a good list of references.
The Linux
Applications and Utilities Page is a collection of commercial,
shareware and freeware application and utility programs and servers
for Linux.
The Linux Software
Map can be searched automatically by the engine. It can help to
figure out where to look for a file specified by some
keywords.
The Linux Enterprise
Computing page attempts to survey Linux in a corporate,
commercial enterprise setting. Very useful.

Project page is devoted to the ports of the popular GNU
development tools to Windows NT/95 for the x86 and PowerPC

The X
Consortium. It maintains and distributes the X Window System
and related software and documentation. The other most important
site about the X window system is the XFree86 site. The MW3 site is devoted to Motif related
stuff.
