This list derives essentially from
Noms français des

(French
Names of the Birds of the World)

des oiseaux
(International Board for the French Names of the Birds, CINFO)
with Pierre DEVILLERS, Henri OUELLET, Édouard BENITO-ESPINAL, Roseline BEUDELS,

The species have a CINFO whole number.
|
The new species described after the publication of the
book, which have no CINFO number, are numbered from the closest species
or from the last species of the genus plus 0,001 then 0,002 and so on.
Sometimes we propose a french name (with a question mark).
This list contains only living (or recently extinct) taxa (no
fossil bird).
So 9913 species
are registered by the CINFO
(zipped .xls list with english
names according to Sibley & Monroe, 1990, ca 400 Ko);
We have added the species discovered since the publication of the book
(at least those we have heard of,
see the Rolf A. de By web site about these newly described
species)
and some subspecies, either candidates to the species rank or not,
leading to a total of 11
463 taxa listed (14·8·06).

We add also the french synonyms from the

l’avifaune française
(French Avifauna

plus some vernacular names from french-speaking
countries (Quebec...), from birds-breeders world or ancient authors (eg
Ménégaux).

To find the french name of a
species
|
" You know the (sub-)family:
Click the family in the left frame.
(sometimes
the CINFO (sub-)families are different from what you know: use the search page to find the CINFO (sub-)family)
" You only know the scientific
name:
Use the search page
Warning: some genera from the generic names list are not those
of the CINFO;
only their CINFO synonyms will be found on the family lists
(for instance you will find Stictocarbo aristotelis
in the genera list
but Phalacrocorax aristotelis in the
Phalacrocoracidae list);
so check from the specific term (beware of the possibly varying
suffixes).
For the scientific synonyms, have a look to
Mic G. WELLS’ book:
World Bird Species Checklist:
with alternative English and scientific names
Worldlist eds, Bushey, 1998,
or go and see other lists.

You will find the CINFO order for the 30 orders and 182
families in the left frame
(clicking a family opens the family in the
main frame)
