What To Drink At Thanksgiving Or Christmas

As Christmas is coming, with the inevitability of a credit card bill, there is a whole load of things to worry about. Christmas present buying, a possibly expensive and traumatic period, followed by the Christmas card list, the decorations, the food, yes, all that food and possibly the last on the list, the Christmas drinks. Christmas drinks are possibly the least thought about but are the subtle catalyst that can turn an ordinary Christmas into a great one. Yes, you can go with all your normal standbys but Christmas is special and so should be your Christmas drinks. Although this is primarily directed at Christmas, it will work just as well for a traditional Thanksgiving meal as well. To start with, there are many traditional Christmas drinks like Egg Nog and mulled ale, in fact my father used to put his beer into a pewter tankard, heat a couple of pokers in the fire, then plunge them into the tankard. This should only be attempted with metal drinks containers, I have a vague...

Chronic Pain Relief: An Overview

Everyone will experience pain at some point in their lives. Pain is a necessary form of protection against injuries, diseases, or conditions that would otherwise impair or even kill us. Pain alerts us that something is wrong. Pain can be either acute or chronic the distinguishing characteristic between the two is their duration. Acute pain usually occurs after a specific injury. It appears quickly and is usually very intense one example is the pain of a broken bone. It subsides fairly quickly, particularly after treatment. Chronic pain, on the other hand, seems to build up over time, and often cannot be connected to a particular injury or condition. What chronic pain lasts in intensity, it makes up for in duration sometimes persisting for decades. Living with constant pain can be unbearable, and many forms of treatment attempt to offer sufferers some sort of chronic pain relief. One of the most commonly prescribed therapy for chronic pain is medication, both prescription and...

A Life Worth Living

In my devotion time this morning, I was reading a passage of scripture I have read many times; however, this time my eyes and thoughts focused on the word leave . In Genesis 12:1-3, the Lord says to Abram, Leave your country, your people and your father s household and go to the land I will show you. How many of us would drop everything, leave our family, our jobs, even our country to follow the call of God. Yet, Abram left, not knowing exactly where he was going, but with a promise that he would be blessed and all the nations of the earth would be blessed through him. I wonder what would have happened if he hadn t left. Certainly, history would have been written differently. If Abram, who later became Abraham, had not stepped out in faith we may not be believers today. The scripture declares that Abraham is the father of us all. His stepping out, his journey of faith established a chain of events that ushered Christ into the world. We are believers because of Abraham s leap of...

Is Eye Sty Harmful?

A sty is a pimple or abscess that forms in either the upper or lower eyelid. The medical term for sty is hordeolum say HOR-dee-oh-lumm and it is an infection caused by bacteria that normally live peacefully on the eyelid skin surface. Some of thee germs get trapped along with dead skin cells inside crypts along the eyelid margin. Stys are usually superficial and plainly visible. Occasionally they can reside deeper within the eyelid. This common infection or inflammation results from blocked glands within the eyelid. When the gland is blocked, the oil produced by the gland occasionally backs up and extrudes through the wall of the gland, forming a lump, which can be red, painful, and nodular. Frequently, bacteria can infect the blocked gland, causing increased inflammation, pain, and redness of the eye and even redness of the surrounding eyelid and cheek tissue. The lump can point externally outward or internally inward . Frequently, the lump appears with a visible whitish or...

Is Obesity A Modern Disease?

French fries. Hamburgers. Pizza soaked with grease. While these meals sound like heart attacks waiting to happen, the majority of the United States is chowing down on these fattening foods. Since the rise of popular fast food chains and excessive marketing through the media, people are starting to experience obesity and major health problems. Has this always been an issue in our culture. Here we take a look at how modern this fattening disease is and what it is doing to our society. For centuries people have been obese. Plus sized clothing, unhealthy eating habits, and an incredible sense of exercise denial. However, they were not always seen as negative images of beauty. Surprisingly, obesity was viewed as royalty and a symbol of how much money you had. If you were a King, chances are you were rather overweight due to the fact that you could eat whatever you wanted to. While others struggled through poverty and starved, those who ate well certainly did pack on the pounds. Therefore...
