A Mandelieu, on a refusé cette situation.en démontrant qu' en sport aussi, David peut devenir Goliath L'aviron répond certes parfaitement à la définition d'un sport dit mineur: pas de plan d'eau, obligation d'évoluer sur le lac de Saint-Cassien, loin des yeux du public... et des élus; beaucoup de licenciés mais une seule compétition par an   sur le littoral; matériel très coûteux.. Mais voilà, du coté de la Siagne, on a eu des idées! Le plan d'eau du canal est étroit? Eh bien on ne fera pas dans le traditionnel avec des courses rectilignes de 2000 mètres et six lignes d'eau. Mais on va lancer des courses-sprint sur 500 mètres en match-racing à deux. Et cette formule va plaire. Plus de temps morts, les courses se succèdent sans laisser le temps au public de s'ennuyer. Le spectacle, intense, ne dure guère pus d'une heure trente. Et il est possible de suivre les bateaux du début à la fin. Le public "mord" et vient de plus en plus nombreux. Par milliers.

D'autant que dans ce cadre champêtre exceptionnel on trouve bien assez d'autres raisons de passer un bon moment. Maintenant, les internationaux de Mandelieu-la-Napoule font deux ou trois fois plus de monde qu' un bon match de football professionnel à Cannes. La municipalité joue le jeu et s'implique à fond. Les médias suivent. Du coup les sponsors arrivent. Ils prennent à leur compte déplacements des équipes, hébergement, nourriture... Et les organisateurs voient de plus en plus grand en faisant venir les meilleurs "huits" d'Europe Le système de la boule de neige, quoi... Et voilà comment, avec beaucoup d'intelligence et d'idées, l'aviron réussit un coup d'éclat. Le temps d'un week-end, le mineur devient majeur!

OXFORD-CAMBRIDGE, la revanche

C'est en 1984, que le premier match OXFORD- CAMBRIDGE est organisé sur le canal de la Siagne, à l'occasion des festivités du 150ème anniversaire de la mort de Lord BROUGHAM, fondateur de la ville de Cannes.Depuis, chaque année, les célèbres équipes universitaires se rencontrent sur la Siagne pour une revanche estivale sprint du traditionnel match les opposant sur la Tamise annuellement depuis 1829.En 1986 est crée le CHALLENGE KELLY, en hommage à la légendaire famille Kelly dont Jack et John B.KELLY (médaillés olympiques) respectivement père et frère de la princesse Grace Kelly sous la présidence de Son Altesse Sérénissime le prince Albert de Monaco qui opposait les universitaires britanniques aux américains de HARVARD et de YALE.cette anée-là, S.A.S. le prince Albert de Monaco était accompagné de Son excellence J.A.Samaranch, président du Comité International Olympique.deux remporté 5 fois le trophée.Les rameurs d'Oxford l'ont emporté en 1998 et 1999 dans le duel qui les opposait à Cambridge qui avait gagné quatre ans d'affilé auparavant.

LE CHALLENGE FÉMININ

en quatre de couple avec barreur

Les courses féminines n'ont été au programme des internationaux de Mandelieu qu'en 1992, dans la même catégorie d'embarcation que les hommes: le "HUIT avec barreur".En 1994, le match féminin prend une nouvelle tournure avec un changement de catégorie d'embarcation .En effet, les rameuses s'alignent en "QUATRE de couple" avec une petite particularité: la présence d'un barreur.Le "quatre de couple", normalement non barré, l'est pourtant sur le canal de la Siagne, ou le plan d'eau et l'étroitesse du passage sous le pont rendent sa présence "préférable".

1984: OXFORD-CAMBRIDGE sur la côte d'azur

   C'est à l'occasion des festivités du 150ème anniversaire de la mort de Lord BROUGHAM ("fondateur" de Cannes) que l'idée d'offrir un spectacle inédit aux habitants de la côte d'azur en hommage aux anglais, et née. Sur le plan sportif, quoi de plus British que le célèbre match OXFORD-CAMBRIDGE qui défit les deux universités depuis 1829 en huit de pointe avec barreur sur la Tamise. C'est donc le 21 Octobre, que des milliers de spectateurs découvraient sur 1300m pour la première fois ce sport magnifique sur le canal de la Siagne à Mandelieu-la-Napoule. OXFORD domine cette première rencontre.

1986: LES COURSES SPRINT, LE CHALLENGE KELLY

    Une année riche en évènements. Les Universités Américaines de Harvard et de Yale sont invitées à leur tour à Mandelieu-la-Napoule. Sous la présidence de Son Altesse Sérénissime la Prince Albert de Monaco, est créé le CHALLENGE KELLY, en hommage à la légendaire famille Kelly, dont Jack et John B. KELLY (médaillés Olympiques) respectivement père et frère de la Princesse Grace KELLY.

Pour permettre de rendre les courses encore plus attrayantes pour le public, le parcours de la course est ramené à 500 m. Les courses Sprints se déroulent du départ à l'arrivée en vue du public passionné.

Son Altesse Sérénissime le prince Albert est accompagné cette année-là de son Excellence J.A. SAMARANCH, président du comité International Olympique.

Les rameurs américains de l'université de Yale seront les premiers vainqueurs du challenge KELLY.

this year again to attend a tremendous rowing regatta in the middle of the summer on the French riviera...The city of Mandelieu La Napoule and Régates européennes d'aviron offer you a breathtaking show: more than 20 crews of eight will be confrontated this year again on the canal of Siagne to win the so desired trophy as well as the prize granted to the winner. you will find information about the regatta as well as photos, regular updates allow you to follow the current events of the regatta and to know about the list of engaged for the next edition.

What the media expect sometimes, it is Rowing when it goes out of waterlines... With Mandelieu La Napoule international regatta, the answer is supplied. Our purpose is to offer a rowing animation to the holiday-makers and thus to promote our sport.Take Oxford and Cambridge, the two most prestigious British universities in rowing, add to this amazing contest the best European clubs and of course the French.For several years the mayonnaise has set quite well and the meeting on the river Siagne at the beginning of August is expected by the accustomed. On 500 metres, between two bridges, the public gathered on the banks sucks up for one minute and a half the rowers in eight and the women in quadruple sculls with coxwain.

On  the least comfortable side of this barrier, one often accepts the inevitable, considering that it is impossible to circumvent the logic of a merciless fate.In Mandelieu, we refused this situation by demonstrating that in sport also, David can become Goliath.Rowing certainly meets the definition of a sport called minor: no stretch of water, obligation to evolve on the lake of Saint-Cassien, far from the eyes of the public and the notables; many rowers but only one competition a year on the coast; very expensive equipment...But then, on the Siagne river banks, we have ideas! The stretch of water of the canal is narrow?Well we will not make it traditional with straight races of 2000 metres and six waterlines.But we will launch sprint-races on 500 metres in match - racing. And this formula is appealing to please. No more dead times, races succeed to one another without leaving time for the public to get bored. The show, intense, does not last more than one hour and a half.And it is possible to follow the boats from the beginning to the end.The public is “taken” and comes more and more numerous. By thousands.All the more as in this exceptional rural scenery they can also find other reasons to spend a good time. Now, Mandelieu-la-Napoule internationals attract two or three times more people than a good professional football match in Cannes. The city council plays the game and gets deeply involved. The medias follow.Therefore the sponsors arrive. They take charge of the team’s travel expenses, accommodations, food, etc…And the organizers have bigger and bigger ideas, welcoming the best " eights " of Europe. The snowball system... And here is how, with a lot of intelligence and ideas, rowing creates a stir. For the time of a weekend, the minor becomes major! An example to be meditated..

In 1986 is created the CUP KELLY CHALLENGE, in homage to the legendary Kelly family among which Jack and John B.KELLY (awarded an Olympic medal) respectively father and brother of the princess Grace Kelly under the presidency of His Highness prince Albert of Monaco. This challenge brought together the British Universities and the Americans of HARVARD and YALE. The teams of Oxford and Cambidge have both won 5 times the trophy. Oxford rowers won in 1998 and 1999 in the duel against Cambridge who had previously won four years at a row.That year, His Highness prince Albert of Monaco was accompanied by His excellency J.A.Samaranch, president of the Olympic International Committee.But the challenge cup KELLY had regrettably to be interrupted in 1991A lot of people on the banks of the river Siagne to applaud the universities. This show is always most appreciated because of the fame of the two crews.

THE FEMININE CHALLENGE CUP

Feminine races were on the program of Mandelieu international only in 1992, in the same category of boat as the men: " EIGHT with coxswain ". In 1994, the feminine contest takes a new form with a change of boat category. Indeed, the rowers align themselves in quadruple sculls with a small peculiarity: the presence of a coxswain Quadruple sculls, normally without a coxwain, have one nevertheless on the Siagne, where the stretch of water and the narrowness of the passage under the bridge makes its presence preferable.

1984: OXFORD-CAMBRIDGE on the french riviera

   It is on the occasion of the festivities of the 150-th death anniversary of Lord BROUGHAM ("the founder" of Cannes) that the idea to offer a new show to the inhabitants of the riviera in homage to the English, was born. In the sports field, what is More British than the famous contest OXFORD-CAMBRIDGE which has challenged the two universities since 1829 in eight with coxswain on the Thames. It was on October 21, that thousands of spectators discovered on 1300m for the first time this magnificent sport on the canal of Siagne in Mandelieu-la-Napoule. OXFORD dominated this first meeting. 

1985: THE SPORT EVENT OF AUGUST

    That year, the champions of France ( Aix-les-Bains) in eight were present on the Siagne. 

OXFORD takes won the finale for the second consecutive year.

1986:  SPRINT RACES, CHALLENGE CUP KELLY

     An eventful year. The American Universities of Harvard and Yale are invited in there turn to Mandelieu-la-Napoule. Under the presidency of His Highness Prince Albert of Monaco, is created the CHALLENGE CUP KELLY, in homage to the legendary Kelly family, among which Jack and John B. KELLY (awarded a Olympic medal) respectively father and brother of the Princess Grace KELLY. 

To allow to make races even more attractive for the public, the course of the race is reduced to 500 m. The sprint races take place from the departure to arrival in the sight of the public. 

His Highness Prince Albert is accompanied this year by His Excellence J.A. SAMARANCH, president of the Olympic International committee. 

The American rowers of Yale university will be the first winners of the challenge cup KELLY.
