Posted on April 4, 2009 by Scotty

While it s always a good time to schedule an appointment with your doctor for a checkup, a particularly good day may be Doctor s Day, especially if you have allergies. Doctors Day began on March 30, 1933 and was celebrated by sending cards to physicians. This year, a good way to celebrate may be by making an appointment with your physician or allergist before your seasonal allergies get the best of you-especially if over-the-counter medications don t control your symptoms or your allergies interfere with your day-to-day activities. The American College of Allergy, Asthma Immunology recommends you see an allergist-a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of asthma and other allergic diseases-if you experience: 8226; seasonal allergies; 8226; chronic sinus infections; 8226; nasal congestion; or 8226; difficulty breathing. What s your cup of tea. Or something more exotic like pu-erh or white tea. No matter which your preference, all tea comes from the same plant - Camellia sinensis. The major difference between all of these types of tea is how the leaves are processed after they are picked. Even so, not all tea leaves are equal. Camellia is a genus of the family Theaceae. The sinensis variety has relatively small and narrow leaves and is more tolerant to cold. The assamica variety will grow to a larger plant than sinensis and has larger, thinner leaves. As with most Camellias, Camellia sinensis is very easy to hybridize and this had led to the...

What Is The Avian Flu - Also Known As The Bird Flu?

Posted on October 29, 2008 by Kandace

The Avian flu is a virus carried by birds and spread through their feces and other secretions. Those most at risk are people who come into contact with infected birds. Of the people who have been infected, many are from families that keep chickens around the home. There have been no signs of the Bird Flu in the United States as yet, and the virus is not easily transmitted from birds to humans. However, once confined to Asia, the Bird Flu has now been identified in other countries. Those that have been diagnosed with the Bird Flu have been in close contact with the infected poultry. A trial vaccine is being developed for the Bird Flu, however since the virus is constantly changing there will have to be a vaccine created to the specific strain that is spreading. Bird flu in poultry does not pose any food safety risk because it is unlikely a sick chicken would be slaughtered for consumption, and thoroughly cooking meat and...
